I love pocket hole joinery (strong and EASY). I already own the Kreg K3MS K3 Master Pocket Hole Jig System. I thought it would fulfill all of my pocket-hole needs. However, during a recent project, I needed to put a pocket hole in a tight place that the included jigs would not fit.
I ordered the mini-jig. Even though this jig requires a little more set-up than the Master jigs, it worked perfectly. It is a great add-on if you already have a jig set. I would not recommend it by itself because, at a minimum, you need the kit that includes the step drill bit as well as the square drive screws / bit.

This is a great little add on jig, if you already have a step drill bit and driver. The jig is great for getting into tight spaces or re-enforcing a loose joint that would be impossible with a full jig. I recommend you first make a test hole, as the directions did not specify enough jig offset to prevent screw head pull through allowing the screw come through the other side. An additional 3/8" offset solved the problem in ACQ 2" x 4" lumber and 2 1/2" stainless screws.

At a fraction of the cost of most alternatives, this is a good deal and Kreg quality is generally realized as a class of its own.
However, for less than the cost of the components, you can buy this jig with drill bit and stop. I don't know why anyone would buy the jig by itself. See MKJKIT

When you think about it, this mini gives you the complete pocket hole capabilities with the least amount of money. (You'll need to buy the special drill bit as well for ideal results, both in starting the screw, and depth adjustability requirements) Since two holes are required for greater strength, you have to move the mini for each drilling. You could use an existing longer reach clamp to hold the mini in place, thereby eliminating the need to buy the clamp with it. So this mini is all of the advantages, without the price, but it requires more time to set up each project. Once you get into the advantages of pocket hole joinery, you probably will want more of the complete kit.
Kreg Pocket Hole offerings made the number one spot across the board in the November 2003 issue of Better Homes and Gardens "Wood" magazine. Everything from the mini on through to the automated production machine were given the top ratings. It was a clean sweep for Kreg. They tested a lot of machines too. Some of the advantages are the flush edge joining to the workpiece prevented tearout. The case hardened steel guides didn't show wear or metal shavings. Easy to make or buy the premade plug holes out of wood. (Some were an odd shape, and wouldn't accept plugs very well)
Even though the body is made out of plastic, which is substantial and well done, the steel guides are the only thing the drill bit touches.
Pocket hole joinery is a nice addition to your arsenal. You will find yourself incorporating it more and more into your projects, and the Kreg system is the best. Highly recommended.
